"If Music Be the Food..." (IMBTF) is a national collection of benefit concerts to raise awareness and support for the hungry in local communities through the sharing of great music donated by professional musicians. The endeavor is entirely volunteer and there is no fixed price for admission -- the audience is invited to bring non-perishable food items or monetary donations of any amount for the partnering food bank. The complete quote from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is "If music be the food of love, play on!" IMBTF strives to help provide food for our bodies as well as music and community for our souls.
Temple Emanuel Denver is proud to host this joyful annual concert to benefit the Weinberg Food Pantry of Jewish Family Service during the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot.
Sheila Reinhold, curator of this concert, first performed as violin soloist with orchestra in New York City at age nine. At fifteen, she joined Jascha Heifetz’s master class, where she studied for five years. Her career has included chamber music with Heifetz and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, appearances as a soloist with major orchestras, premieres of works for both violin and viola, and freelance work from Broadway to movie scores. She has had a lifelong dedication to teaching, serving as adjudicator, guest teacher and chamber music coach at, among others, the Juilliard School, Mannes College, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman School of Music and Columbia University, in addition to her private teaching, and in the summer she is on the faculty of the Chamber Music Conference and Composers Forum of the East at Colgate University. She also teaches courses for adult music lovers through the University of Denver. She is the founder and Music Director of Intimate Voices, a chamber music series in New York City, which has been presenting chamber music concerts and community outreach events since 2009.
Sandra Wong began studying the violin at age seven with the intention of becoming a concert violinist. This remained her sole focus for fifteen years, until she discovered fiddling…and her musical world was turned upside down! Since then, Sandra’s focus has shifted to connecting other people and cultures through music as a way to build community and express our common humanity. Opening this door with an exploration of Irish, Old-time and Bluegrass music, her folk music journey has moved her into her current livelihood of teaching, performing, recording and collaborating with other musicians from a diverse range of musical genres. In 1999, Sandra opened another door when she discovered a 14th century Swedish folk instrument called the nyckelharpa and fell in love. This 16 stringed, keyed instrument played with a bow has become an integral part of her musical expression. Sandra has toured nationally and internationally as a solo artist and in collaboration with various musicians in all musical genres as well as appearing on multiple solo and collaborative recordings. Another important aspect of Sandra’s work is education and nurturing a deep love of music and the arts in both children and adults. She teaches privately and in group and workshop settings, and presents family and children’s concerts. Sandra also creates and personally facilitates musical study trips to different countries leading people into the heart of individual folk cultures through the music and dance of each country.
